To change the course of people’s lives is a special reward few
will ever know. To be equally enriched by making such a change
must be just as powerful as it is recalling her time in Zambia that
has Roper welling up, on the verge of letting it all out.
“One of the schools we went to in Zambia, the security firm that
was looking after us gave them a computer room,” she says. “Two
years ago this school barely had tables or chairs but now has a
computer room. The week we were there, it was being put together
and they opened it on the morning of the tournament. So we
started with the opening of the computer room. We would go in
and paint the room at night after we had been coaching.
When it came to plug the computers in, all the kids from round
about cheered and cheered for about an hour. This was a school
with one toilet block that didn’t even work. And all the female
teachers sang, a prayer song and it was wow.
“Now these kids had a chance to better themselves outside the
little town of Choma and that would never have happened if
Richard hadn’t taken rugby to that little town. Rugby is bigger
than the sport. It is changing lives.”
UNITE EMPOWER INSPIRE
Bhubesi Pride Foundation assembles
teams of committed volunteers to carry
out annual rugby coaching expeditions,
using the sport as a tool for education
and development in Africa.
Our annual expeditions run for five
months, from February to July. During
this time we visit nine African countries,
travelling by road, and we work with
thousands of children and hundreds
of local staff.
You can be part of our international
team of volunteers from 3 weeks to the
full five month project, joining us at any
stage of our journey.
