DREAMS SLADE
Colin Slade was a player the
All Blacks wanted to keep
but he signed with Pau.

T
he danger has eased but not
passed for the NZRU. The foreign
clubs haven’t gone and they will
continue to look for young All
Blacks they can whisk away.
Not only will the NZRU have to be
prepared to challenge their own payment
hierarchy and pay top dollar to those who
are in global demand as opposed to those
who have paid their dues, they have to
continue to work innovative formats
into contracts.
“I don’t believe there is any silver bullet
that we haven’t thought of yet,” says
Sorensen. “What we are trying to do is
create an environment where a young man
can have a decent career in New Zealand.
Where he is rewarded financially, but he’s
also well educated and his family is a big
concern for us – so that his partner and
kids and understanding what the partner
wants in the next few years.
We are not going to win on the
financial battle. We have got to ensure that
the players are not thrashed from
November 1 to December 3 like an All
Black can be. How we manage their
workloads is really important because I
know if I was an All Black and you have an
option to go to Ireland where they slog it
out for 40 games a year but in New
Zealand they can see they get good leave,
they get good rehab, they get rested
through the year, the chance to not think
about rugby...it is well managed and my
partner and I are happy.
